Our Name
We named our firm after legendary investor and philanthropist Floyd Odlum.
Mr. Odlum was perhaps the only man to build a great fortune during the Depression. He didn’t speculate on stocks or establish a new school of security analysis; he simply bought undervalued post-Crash firms, reorganized them, liquidated their assets, and with the cash he repeated the process again and again.
Mr. Odlum was so astute and disciplined in his purchases that Wall Street titan and Goldman Sachs managing partner Sidney Weinberg nicknamed him “Fifty Percent” for his skill in identifying and buying assets at 50 cents on the dollar.
Mr. Odlum represents more to us than just his unparalleled investment results during the Depression. He signifies a business philosophy that is just as relevant today as it was in 1929.
Whether it is 1929 or 2009, buying valuable assets for 50 cents and selling them for a dollar is a great business. Floyd Odlum knew this in 1929, and it's the business of Odlum Capital today.
